How to add VAT and remove VAT (reverse VAT)

Adding tax: total = net price × (1 + rate)
Removing tax: net price = total ÷ (1 + rate)

To add 20% UK VAT to £100, multiply by 1.2: the total is £120 and the VAT is £20. To take VAT out of £120, divide by 1.2, not multiply by 0.8. Dividing gives the correct £100; taking 20% off would give £96, which is wrong because the 20% was charged on the smaller net amount.

Sales tax on Etsy, eBay and Shopify

In most US states, marketplaces such as Etsy and eBay collect and pay sales tax for you on orders through their platform. On your own Shopify store you're usually responsible for charging and filing it where you're registered. In the UK and EU, VAT-registered sellers usually include VAT in the price they list. Speak to an accountant about your own obligations.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, multiply by 1.2. £50 becomes £60, with £10 of VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2. £60 becomes £50 net, with £10 of VAT.

Why can't I just subtract 20% to remove VAT?

Because VAT was charged on the net price, not the total. Taking 20% off £120 gives £96, but the correct net price is £100.

Do the US presets include local sales tax?

No. They're state base rates. Cities and counties often add their own tax, so the combined rate can be higher. Type the combined rate in the tax rate field.

Do Etsy and eBay collect sales tax for me?

In most US states, yes: as marketplace facilitators they collect and remit sales tax on orders made through their platforms.
