Shopify fees by plan in 2026
Shopify doesn't take a commission when you use Shopify Payments. You pay a monthly plan and a card processing fee on each order. These are the US rates for online card payments:
| Plan | Monthly price | Online card rate | Extra fee without Shopify Payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 ($29 billed yearly) | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2% |
| Grow | $105 ($79 billed yearly) | 2.7% + $0.30 | 1% |
| Advanced | $399 ($299 billed yearly) | 2.5% + $0.30 | 0.6% |
Starter ($5 a month) is for selling through social links and charges a much higher fee per sale. Shopify Plus starts at about $2,300 a month. Card rates differ outside the US; yours are under Settings > Payments.
Worked example: a $40 order on Shopify Basic
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Payment fee (2.9% of $40 + $0.30) | $1.46 |
| Item cost, label, packaging and ads | $16.70 |
| Net profit before monthly costs | $21.84 (54.6% margin) |
That beats the same order on Etsy, but leaves out the monthly plan and the cost of bringing buyers to your store.
Use it as a Shopify pricing calculator
Add your monthly plan and apps, divided by orders per month, in Plan & apps per order. A $39 plan plus $36 in apps is $75 a month: $1.25 per order at 60 orders, $3.75 at 20. To work backwards from the margin you want, use the target price calculator.
When a higher Shopify plan pays for itself
Grow lowers the card rate from 2.9% to 2.7%, saving $0.20 on every $100. With monthly billing it costs $66 more than Basic, so you need about $33,000 a month in online card sales before it pays off; with yearly billing the gap is $50, or about $25,000 in sales.
Frequently asked questions
How are Shopify fees calculated in 2026?
With Shopify Payments in the US, each online order pays a card fee of 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow or 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, charged on the full amount the customer pays including shipping. On top of that you pay the monthly plan: $39 for Basic, or $29 a month billed yearly. If you use an outside payment provider, Shopify adds 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on the plan.
Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?
Not with Shopify Payments: you pay the card fee and your plan. With another payment provider, Shopify adds a fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on your plan.
What's the difference between the payment fee and the transaction fee?
The payment fee is the cost of processing the card. The transaction fee is an extra charge Shopify adds only when you use a third-party payment provider.
How do I include my Shopify plan in profit per order?
Divide your monthly plan and app costs by your monthly orders and enter the result in Plan & apps per order.
Is there a Shopify profit calculator app?
Yes. This Shopify fee calculator is part of the free profit calculator app for Android, alongside Etsy, eBay and TikTok Shop calculators.
Do I pay card fees on shipping?
Yes. The card fee applies to the full amount the customer pays, shipping included.
