    Dropshipping unit economics

Dropshipping lives or dies on one number: how much of each order is left after the supplier, fees and refunds, because that's your budget for ads. Most dropshipping stores rely on paid traffic, so a product only works if that budget is bigger than what it costs to win an order.

Left for ads = price − product cost − supplier shipping − fees − apps − refunds
Profit per order = left for ads − ad cost per order

Worked example: a $39.99 product on Shopify

    LineAmount
    Selling price (free shipping)$39.99
    Product and supplier shipping$16.00
Card fees, apps and 3% refund allowance$3.46
    Left for ads and profit$20.53
    Ad cost per order$12.00
    Profit per order$8.53 (21.3% margin)

Break-even ROAS is 1.95x and the maximum you can pay per order is $20.53. At 100 orders a month, profit is $853.

    Ways to improve dropshipping profit

    • Raise order value with bundles and upsells, so each ad-driven order carries more contribution.
    • Negotiate supplier costs once a product sells consistently.
    • Cut refunds with accurate delivery times and product photos.
    • Track CPA by product. A store average can hide a product that loses money on every order.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good profit margin for dropshipping?

After ads, many dropshipping stores land between 10% and 30% net margin. Below 10%, refunds or a rise in ad costs can turn the product unprofitable.

How do I calculate break-even ROAS for dropshipping?

Divide the order value by the money left after product, supplier shipping, fees, apps and refunds. For $20.53 left from a $39.99 order, break-even ROAS is 1.95x.

    What should CPA include?

All ad spend divided by the orders it produced, across every channel you pay for.

    Why include refunds?

Refunded orders usually still cost you the product and shipping. Setting aside a percentage of revenue keeps your profit estimate realistic.
