How to calculate e-commerce profit margin

Every online sale has the same shape: money in from the buyer, money out for the product, shipping, ads and platform fees. The calculator above does the arithmetic, but it helps to know the formula behind it.

Net profit = (item price + shipping charged) − (product cost + shipping label + packaging + advertising + platform fees)
Profit margin = net profit ÷ (item price + shipping charged) × 100

    1. Add up what the buyer pays. Include the shipping you charge, because Etsy, eBay and card processors take their percentage on it too.
    2. Subtract your costs. Product or materials, the postage label, packaging and your ad spend per sale.
    3. Subtract platform fees. Use the fee rates for your platform and plan. The calculator fills in standard US rates for 2026.
    4. Divide by revenue. What's left over, divided by what the buyer paid, is your net profit margin.

For a $35 item with $5 shipping, $16.70 in costs and Etsy's standard fees of $4.25, net profit is $19.05 and the profit margin is 47.6%. The same order nets $21.84 on Shopify Basic and $17.46 on eBay, before Shopify's monthly plan.

Etsy, Shopify and eBay fees at a glance (2026)

The three platforms charge in very different ways. Etsy and eBay take a share of every sale and send you buyers; Shopify charges a monthly plan and a card fee, and leaves the marketing to you.

What is a good profit margin for an online store?

There's no single right number, but these ranges are a useful guide for small shops. The gauge in the calculator uses the same bands.

    Net marginWhat it usually means
Below 0%Every sale loses money. Raise the price or cut costs before you sell more.
0–15%Thin. One refund, a damaged parcel or an ad fee can wipe out the profit.
15–30%Healthy for most products, with some room for discounts.
30% and upStrong. Common for handmade and digital products where you control the cost.

If you advertise, also check your break-even ROAS: the return on ad spend below which every order loses money.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate e-commerce profit margin?

Add the item price and the shipping you charge to get revenue. Subtract every cost of the order: product cost, shipping label, packaging, advertising and platform fees. That's net profit. Divide net profit by revenue and multiply by 100 to get your profit margin.

How are Shopify fees calculated in 2026?

With Shopify Payments in the US, each online order pays a card fee of 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow or 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, charged on the full amount the customer pays including shipping. On top of that you pay the monthly plan: $39 for Basic, or $29 a month billed yearly. If you use an outside payment provider, Shopify adds 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on the plan.

    What percentage does Etsy take?

For a US seller, Etsy takes 6.5% of the order total as a transaction fee plus 3% + $0.25 for payment processing, and charges $0.20 per listing. That's 9.5% of the sale plus $0.45 in fixed fees, or about 10.6% on a $40 order. Offsite Ads add 12–15% on orders that come from Etsy's ads.

How much does eBay take per sale?

In most categories eBay charges a 13.6% final value fee on the total sale, including shipping, plus a per-order fee of $0.40 (or $0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Payment processing is included in that fee. On a $40 order, that's $5.84.

Which platform is cheapest: Etsy, Shopify or eBay?

Per order, Shopify usually takes the least because it charges only a card fee, but you pay a monthly plan and have to bring your own buyers. Etsy and eBay take more per sale and send you traffic. Enter your product above and the comparison table shows the net profit on each.
