The short answer

Digital downloads on Etsy pay the same fees as physical products. For a US seller that's a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing on every sale. There's no shipping to charge, so the fees apply to the item price alone.

Because there are no materials, packaging or postage, digital products can carry very high margins. The catch is that most printables are cheap, and on a low price Etsy's fixed fees take a much bigger share.

How much Etsy takes from a digital sale

PriceTotal Etsy feesShare of the sale
$5 printable$0.9318.5%
$12 planner$1.5913.3%
$25 template bundle$2.8311.3%

The percentage fees are always 9.5% combined. The extra share on cheap items comes from the fixed $0.45 ($0.20 listing plus $0.25 processing), which costs the same on a $3 sticker sheet as on a $30 course workbook.

The listing fee renews with every sale

Digital listings usually have a large quantity available, so Etsy renews the listing automatically each time one sells and charges another $0.20. In practice you pay the listing fee on every sale, not just once when you publish.

Offsite Ads hit digital products hard

If a sale comes through Etsy's Offsite Ads, you pay 15% of the order, or 12% if your shop made over $10,000 in the past year. On a $12 planner that's another $1.80, more than the standard fees combined. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; it's worth checking whether Offsite Ads sales are worth it for your price points.

Sales tax and VAT on digital items

Etsy collects US sales tax in most states and handles VAT on digital items bought by customers in the UK, the EU and several other countries. You don't need to add it to your price, and it isn't part of your revenue. It does mean the buyer may see a higher total at checkout than your listed price.

A worked example: a $12 digital planner

LineAmount
Sale price$12.00
Etsy fees (9.5% + $0.45)$1.59
Etsy Ads spend per sale$0.80
Design time and software, spread across sales$0.50
Profit per sale$9.11 (75.9% margin)

Margins like this are normal for digital products. The real limits are how many you sell and how much you spend on ads to get each sale.

What you can sell as a digital download

Etsy allows digital items you've made or designed yourself: printables, planners, templates, patterns, fonts, presets, colouring pages and similar files that buyers download after paying. Reselling files someone else made, or selling designs that copy other people's work or trademarks, breaks Etsy's rules and can get listings or your shop removed.

A simple pricing formula for digital products

With no materials or shipping, your costs per sale are mostly fees and advertising. To hit a target margin, solve for the price the same way as for a physical product:

Price = (ad cost per sale + other costs + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − target margin)

For a printable with $0.60 of ads per sale and a 70% target margin: ($0.60 + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − 0.70) = $5.12. Price it at $4 and the margin falls to about 64%; at $3 it drops to about 55%. The cheaper the file, the more each cent of ads and fees matters.

How to keep more from each digital sale

  • Bundle instead of selling singles. Three separate $9 sales pay $3.92 in fees; one $25 bundle pays $2.83 and saves the buyer money too.
  • Avoid very low prices. Below about $5, fixed fees take close to a fifth of every sale.
  • Track ad cost per sale. On a $5 item, a $1 ad cost per sale halves your profit. The ROAS calculator shows how much you can afford.
  • Price for value, not file size. Buyers pay for the time you save them, so test higher prices on your best sellers.
